Do you know what paralyzes me; creatively, spiritually, and intellectually more than anything else in this cruel, cold world? S-H-A-M-E. And babe, I’ve been battling the demons of shame extra hard over the past several days. (I’ll save that tea for another essay).
And when shame, that vicious little snake slides her slippery body around my vulnerable waist — I can actually feel my insides recoil. I don’t know about you, but I’m fucking scared of the shame snake. Especially when she surreptitiously slithers up my torso, curls herself around my neck, and hisses in my ear: “Zara, you’re a weak bitch. You’ve got no backbone. This is why you’ll *never* see your dreams come to fruition. Ever.”
I find it hard to ignore the shame snake. Her presence is too jarring, too creepy, too unnerving. Which is why when that bitch pays me I visit, I usually hit up one of the ole’ bs: benzos or booze. Or both.
But herein lies the issue with self-medicating. Self-medicating begets more shame! It’s a vicious fucking cycle, one that I’ve fought and written about endlessly.
But you know what I’ve come to realize silences the hiss hiss hiss of shame more than narcotics? Words. Thank Lana Del Rey for the art of the written word. Saves my life every goddamn time.
This is why I spent hours today compiling a list of quotes ALL dealing with ADDICTION & SHAME from my debut BOOK: GIRL, STOP PASSING OUT IN YOUR MAKEUP. Next week I’ll compile some love quotes and the following week I’ll find something else. But in the meantime, grab a cup of hot tea with lemon, a glass of wine, a cig, a joint, or one of those super chic CBD pens and dive in.
Pin these bad boys. Save them. Screenshot them. Print them out and tape them to your bathroom mirror. Keep these nuggets of shame-reduction and musings on addiction somewhere safe to remind you that ~you~ little sister are far more powerful than the shame snake could ever dream of being! Because guess what? The shame snake’s not real. She’s a figment of your imagination! But you — you my darling — you’re real as fuck, and what’s real always wins the race.
And REMEMBER: GIRL, STOP PASSING OUT IN YOUR MAKEUP: THE BAD GIRL’S GUIDE TO GETTING YOUR SH*T TOGETHER is available NOW on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound, AUDIBLE, and BAM! It would mean the absolute WORLD to me if you were to buy her! She makes a killer, inexpensive gift too! I think you’ll love her.
(Oh and pretty, pretty please leave me a review of GIRL, STOP PASSING OUT IN YOUR MAKEUP! I want to write books for you forever and *your* reviews can make that happen! I also detest asking for things it embarrasses me to my core, but my career suffers from my debilitating shyness and I can’t let that happen anymore).
